The Australian War Memorial provides Summer Vacation Scholarships for history students in their third or fourth year of an undergraduate course, undertaking early-stage postgraduate studies, and/or enrolled in museum or public history courses. At the completion of their scholarship, students present their research to staff and interested members of the public.
In this live and interactive webinar we will host our two speakers, Rose Dryzek and Timothy Kemm.
Rose’s project explores the experiences of 1st Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, during the static period of the Korean War. In Korea from April 1952 until March 1953, the battalion suffered through extreme temperatures and heavy mortar and shell fire, all while undertaking dangerous night time patrols and avoiding unmarked minefields. Rose argues that the soldiers of 1RAR were able to cope with these trying conditions through a combination of effective leadership, a shared sense of camaraderie, and by finding humour in their circumstances.
Tim’s project is on Major General Sir Charles Rosenthal – a commander of the First World War. Rosenthal was a popular general, known for his belligerence, his operatic baritone, and his reckless front-line behaviour. During the war he proved himself to be an able soldier and commander. Educated, resourceful and optimistic to a fault, Rosenthal’s story as a general of the First World War is one of famous battles, sniper’s bullets and musical interludes.
